We have just lost a dear friend and comrade, Richard Bircumshaw. He will be so missed by so many people who knew him for so many different reasons-anarchist, anti fascist, anti fracker, supporter of homeless people and refugees, community food grower, friend of those with mental health challenges, campaigner for the Palestinan people...the list goes on, a life well led. DEATH OF A DIGGER (and anti-fracking welding King)
Very sad to hear the news of the death earlier this month of a good friend and comrade of mine from Bolton, Richard Bircumshaw. Richard was a member of the Bolton Diggers' group for many years and is seen below (on the left) staffing their stall at the 2016 Wigan Diggers' Festival.
For those of you who didn't know him, Richard was a mild mannered, friendly guy always eager to help others, who was committed to the fight for equality and social justice everywhere. As an example Richard was responsible for making many of the devices used in the lock-ons at PNR and elsewhere which helped to delay the progress of the fracking company Cuadrilla for many months and must have cost them a small fortune. I got to know him around ten years ago during which time I met him on numerous marches, demos and other such events. Richard also regularly helped out transporting PA equipment to and from Swinton to all parts of the North West including to our Diggers' Festival in Wigan of which he was a strong supporter of.
Richard attended most of our Festivals to provide amongst other things, free home cooked food for the homeless and those on low incomes, something which he was regularly involved in the Bolton area. Richard's death is a sad loss and he will be sorely missed by his family, friend and comrades.
